Somehow, it’s still 80 degrees in Oklahoma and it’s almost November. These mild temperatures won’t last forever though. Getting your car, truck or SUV ready for the snow and slush that will surely arrive is a smart move. Here are winter preventative maintenece tips straight from Edmond Hyundai’s best car care specialists.
Make sure your engine has the fluids it needs. This step is critical because it has the greatest effect on the performance and maintenance of your vehicle. Double check all your fluids, especially keeping an eye on the engine oil and the engine coolant. These two keep the engine running smoothly and control its internal temperature. To make sure your new or used vehicle is in prime condition for cooler weather, drop by the Edmond Hyundai service center in Oklahoma City. We will get your car winter ready.

Get that windshield winter ready.Make getting the snow off your windshield easier this winter by having good pair of wiper blades. You can also purchase wiper fluid that incorporates a de-icer. You’ll thank yourself for these things later.

Is your battery ready for the temperature change? Do you dread leaving your warm bed to wake up in the winter mornings? Or maybe its that you hate the cold floors that winter brings. Whatever your winter morning woe, apply that same feeling to your battery– it hates winter. Car batteries have the hardest time starting up in the cold weather because it needs a stronger electrical current, just like you need a stronger cup of coffee. Make sure your car has a battery that is up to the job. You can tell by age, condition and previous experience.
Do you know when you bought your current battery? If it has been more than three years or you don’t know, you’ll need to test the power at your local auto store. Make sure there is no corrosion around the battery connectors for the best current flow. Lastly, have you ever had problems with your car starting? If yes, it may be a good time to get a new battery.

Pack an emergency kit. This tip has been around forever and may seem a little dated, but if you have ever waited on something in the snow, you know if takes a while to get anything– from a pizza to a tow truck. Make sure that you have what it takes to wait it out in the worst conditions. Our Hyundai emergency kit includes:

  • Blanket(s)
  • A flashlight
  • A candle
  • A lighter
  • A shovel
  • An ice scraper
  • A portable phone charger
  • Some cat litter

Most of these tips can be done at home, but for any maintenance questions please call our service department.
